Thanks to Oprah, the trailer for this week’s throwback Thursday is for Darnell Martin’s 2005 made for TV movie, “Their Eyes Were Watching God” – an almost positive adaption of that classic novel by that inspiring novelist Zora Neale Hurston. (Spoiler alert! I’m afraid the characters in this spend more time with their eyes watching each other instead of God 😉 lol). Halle Berry stars in this film adaption, giving a perfect performance, alongside Michael Ealy, Ruben Santiago-Hudson, the venerable Ruby Dee, Terrence Howard, and Lorraine Toussaint. For you who haven’t read the novel yet (that’s me too!), here’s a teeny-tiny heads up on the plot: “A drama set in the 1920s, where free-spirited Janie Crawford’s search for happiness leads her through several different marriages, challenging the morals of her small town.” When Their Eyes Were Watching God first debuted on tv, some bemoaned the book parts left un-filmed, mainly having to do with race issues and all that good stuff, or bad stuff. That being said, it’s probably best if you haven’t read the book yet. You can just watch the film with no expectations, except that of great performances and lush Southern scenery, because I said so 🙂 . Here, let me help you with that free of charge.
