The trailer for this week’s throwback Thursday is for Frank Marshall’s 1990 horror-comedy Arachnophobia, starring Jeff Daniels, John Goodman, Harley Jane Kozak, Julian Sands and Stuart Pankin. I distinctly remember seeing this film on TV as a 8-ish year old kid holed up in a hotel room (again…). What I can’t distinctly remember is if I crept into the bed scared that night or the next or the next…. 😱 I most likely did not because, aside from the fact that I was a brave child (if I may say so myself 😝), Arachnophobia is exactly what Ebert said it was: “For all of the creepy-crawly shocks in the film, “Arachnophobia” never goes over the edge into sheer, disgusting horror….This is the kind of movie where you squirm out of enjoyment, not terror….It doesn’t pound you over the head with violence. Like the spider itself, it has a certain respect for structure.” Still, if you actually HAVE arachnophobia, you probably should stay away from seeing your fears played out on screen. 🕷
